Lesson 1 - What is a Pal?

Map and Globe Skill - Address

During social studies class we were discussing the parts of an address. Addresses start with a number and then the street name. All parts of the street name should begin with a capital letter.

I gave each of the children 6 “letters” to deliver. I set up 2 streets, Cat Road and Tap Street. The children needed to look at the street signs and the number on the houses when they delivered the “letters”.

Math - Addition

We have begun practicing 2 digit addition. We discussed the terminology that we will use: plus, equals, addend and sum. Then, I would right and addition equation on the board without the sum. The children were to use the ten fame and counters to solve the equation. I have asked them to always use red for the first addend and yellow for the second. Last, they would tell me the sum.

Math - Subitizing

This week we have been working on number sense activities.

We have been working on subitizing. Subitizing means the ability to look at a group of objects and recognize how many without counting.

We have watched Subitizing videos such as these:

Today, we played a game similar to the card game War. Each child was given a colored deck of cards with tens frames of numbers 0 through 20. Each child would flip a card. The child whose card had the greater amount would win the cards. Once they have flipped all the cards, they count the cards and the child with the most cards wins. This games included many skills: subitizing once the cards were flipped, counting to see who won, and sorting the cards by color when they finished. I was asked for this to be added to the math center.
