Math - Count on to Subtract

We have been working on counting on to subtract.  I have told the children to be a math detective and only use the clues (numbers) given.

1.  First, make a big jump to the number taken away. (Part)

2.  Next, circle the whole (Total) on the number line.  This is the stop sign.

3.  Last, draw little jumps to the whole. (Stop sign)

4.  Count the little jumps and that is the difference.

Example:

P.E. - Sinking Ships

Each purple mat is a ship.  The sailors are trying to sink each other’s ship by knocking down all the cones and bowling pins with balls.  They are only allowed to step one foot off the ship.  Each ship has a lifeboat (scooter) that goes out a brings ball back to the ship.
