Class IXL Certificate

I am proud of all the hard work!

Summer Assignments from Mrs. Wall

Hi Parents and Guardians of future 2nd graders!

I'm looking forward to meeting you all in August and enjoying a great year of learning with your children.

Reviewing 1st grade skills over the summer will help reinforce what your children learned this past school year and will help prepare them for 2nd grade. I'm asking for your help to make sure your child completes assignments for RQ and IXL during the summer break.

Read n Quiz (RQ): Please have your child read and test over 2 books over the summer. I'm not assigning a minimal reading level for each child, but please do not allow your child read a book below level 1.0.

IXL: Please have your child work on any unfinished Math and Language Arts sections of 1st grade IXL (NOT 2nd grade!) Check to make sure he/she reaches a Smartscore of at least 80 on each section, but if you'd like your child to work beyond that, please do so.

Addition and Subtraction flash cards: if your child struggles with quickly recalling basic math facts, please practice addition and subtraction facts with flash cards at least once a week. You may also want to check out XtraMath for online practice.

If you have any questions or concerns, please let me know. I'll be checking my email over the break. Thank you for helping get your child ready for 2nd grade!

Visiting the 2nd Grade Classroom

On Thursday, the children to a trip to the 2nd grade classroom.  They were able to see where the classroom is, talk to Mrs. Wall, and talk to the current second grade students. I can’t believe this time has come!

Escape Room/ Crack the Code Activity

The children worked together as a class to solve each problem in order to keep from being locked in the school all summer.  The children used tools such a a Super Secret Summer Code and a pigpen cypher to solve the puzzles and earn the keys needed to get out.   (I had to research the pigpen cipher.  I had never heard of it!). They worked very hard and completed the activity but unfortunately not within our 60 minute suggested time frame.  We would have been locked in the school.  In each envelope, they earned awards.  After we escaped school, the children voted on which award to give each classmate.  Each child was given one award.  It was interesting to see what they see in each other.

Grammar - Parts of Speech Review

The children played a game as a way to review nouns, verbs, and adjectives.  I placed 12 cards around the room.  Each card had word with a matching picture.  The children had to circle the part of speech for each card.
